Michael Florentino Cellar 2009 Pinot Grigio
2009 Pinot Grigio from Michael Florentino Cellars, Woodinville, WA. This small boutique winery specializes in unique grape varietals. With the perfect climate of Washington State these grapes produce very unique wines.
Washington State is said to have around 740 wineries with over 43,000 acres of planted vineyards, this yields a harvest of 142,000 tons of grapes. Exporting to over 40 countries around the world Washington is said to rank second in the US in the production of wine, just behind CA. The bountiful harvests in this state is said to be influenced by long hours of sunlight (on average, two more hours a day than in CA during the growing season) and consistent temperatures.
This grape is said to possibly be a mutant of the popular red Pinot Noir. Growing best in cool climates, and maturing relatively early leaves this wine with high sugar levels, leads to either a sweeter wine, or, if fermented to dryness, a wine high in alcohol. Growing in small clusters upon ripening, often display a pinkish-gray hue, although the colors can vary from blue/gray to pinkish-brown. Pinot Gris is often blended with Pinot Noir to enrich and lighten the Pinot Noir’s flavor. So if you love Pinot Grigio and want to try a red give Pinot Noir a chance.
With hints of grapefruit, apple and a creamy finish I enjoy this Pinot Grigio with seafood, roast chicken, light pastas or a cheese cracker combination. With the wine being fairly acidic, I avoid pairing with foods that have high acidic content, like citrus fruits or a tomato-based recipe. This wine can be a refreshing way to cool off on a hot summer day.
I enjoy this wine with smoked cheeses & veal.
